Scouts

WHO IS SCOUTS FOR?

Any young person aged between 10½ and 14 years.

Sometimes it is possible to join the Troop at 10, depending on the individual and their needs and stay until 14½ years old.

Scouts should be encouraged to move onto the Explorer section at 14, but there is an element of flexibility around this.

Young people usually progress from Beaver Scouts, to Cubs, then Scouts, then Explorer Scouts and finally Network Scouts/Leader. However, if you have not tried Scouting before and you are in our age range, then give us a try!

WHAT DO SCOUTS DO?

Scouting is a very positive thing for young people and will develop confidence, self esteem, communication skills all whilst having lots of fun, in a structured environment. Scouts are also encouraged to become more self reliant and independent.

Everyone can work at their own level and develop at their own pace as taking part rather than meeting a target is the most important thing.

The Scouts achievements are also recognised with a number of Challenge awards and activity badges. For example, there is the Community Challenge where Scouts are encouraged to help out their local community, the Expedition challenge, where Scouts will go on an expedition which they have planned or the Creative challenge where their creativity is encouraged. The programme is balanced to develop lots of different aspects of the Scouts’ personality and to help on the journey towards being the adult citizens of the future.

WANT TO FIND OUT MORE?

Have a look at the ‘groups and units’ section and find a troop near you. Pop down and pay them a visit or use the ‘contact us’ tab at the top of page and we can put you in touch with your local Scout leader.

Scouting in Newcastle District has plenty going on, from troop based camps and activities to District events such as Archery, Football and Swimming competitions and Camps going on. Scout troops are spread all over the area and there will be one to suit your son or daughter’s needs. We also have a bi-annual Gang Show where Leaders and members of all the sections showcase their talents.

There is something always going on to suit your son or daughters interests and needs. So, come and join in the adventure!

(You could help out as an adult helper/leader too – looks great on the CV!).
